Review: Lumonisoty by Stephanie Thomas PLUS Blog Tour & Giveaway

by Stephanie Thomas

My name is Beatrice. When I was born, I was blessed with the Sight. I was immediately removed from my parents and enrolled in the Institution. At the age of twelve, I had my first true vision, earning my raven’s wings. And when I turned seventeen, one of my visions came true. Things haven’t been the same since.

The Institution depends on me to keep the City safe from our enemy, the Dreamcatchers, but I’m finding it harder to do while keeping a secret from everyone, including my best friend Gabe. It is a secret that could put us all in danger. A secret that could kill me and everyone close to me.

But the enemy has been coming to me in my dreams, and I think I’m falling in love with him. He says they’re coming. He says they’re angry. And I think I’ve already helped them win.

I love it when a book comes full circle. I was able to participate in the cover reveal for this book and now I'm on the blog tour! My book love circle is complete. I have wanted to read this book for a long time now and I tend to love anything that entangled puts out. But I blame my current state of mind for not being able to fully enjoy this book to its full potential.

Luminosity is a wonderfully new paranormal book about Seers and Dreamcatchers. And I wanted to keep going but three things happened. One I have gotten myself into a reading funk. And that totally sucks because if the book doesn’t do exactly what I want, its total crap. Two I tried to read this on turkey day and ended up sleeping half the day. And three, the book just didn’t grip me hard enough within the first 100 pages for me to get over issues one and two and keep reading. I found myself getting a little bored and daydreaming about doing other things. And that is never fun.

Now I want to say, that this book is wonderfully written (the parts that I read) and I love that it was a different paranormal kind of book. If you are sick of wolves, fairies and vampires I would totally check this one out. The whole concept was great and intriguing but again, I don’t know what it was. It just didn’t grip me like I wanted it to.

I think some of it was the pacing of the book. 100 pages in and the main plot line wasn’t revealed and I didn’t quite know where the book was going. Some elements felt weak. The “romance” was bland and at times, I felt the book was more of a bad episode of some crappy MTV high school show talking about what lip-gloss would be better. It spent too much time talking about every day stuff and explain step by step Bea’s life. I get it, she walks down the corridor, and you don’t have to say what each footstep was like.

I ended up skimming a lot and that just makes me so sad. I might try again another time when I'm in the mood to read. I really think that my main reason I wasn’t grabbed with this book was I'm not in a reading mood. For anything.

I do want to recommend this book to everyone though that is sick and tired of cookie cutter YA paranormal books trying to capture Twilight or Hunger Games fame. This is unique and different and a bit gritty.

Her love for writing followed her all throughout her schooling, where she entered and won writing contests of all sorts. Stephanie decided to become an English teacher and completed her B.A. at The Pennsylvania State University. While teaching, she later went on to get her Master’s in writing from The Johns Hopkins University. She completed her very first manuscript during her graduate studies, and by the end of the program, she had completed two more. 1. I like the sound of this book, it does sound unique and very interesting, different. I don't know if I'll read it, but I will definitely check it out!!

You already know I love this review, and that it had me gigglin' Loved the comparison to a MTV crappy High School drama! Just really liked that!

  2. Sorry about your reading funk! I really enjoyed this book! I found the romance with Gabe wonderful but the romance with Echo was dry, forced and unnecessary. I did think the paranormal world was unique and I thought there was some good action. Maybe another time this will work for you.
